Czech Beer Guide: Types & Beer Culture in Prague
Czech Beer Guide: Types & Beer Culture in Prague
Czech beer is an important part of the country’s culinary heritage and everyday culture. While Czechia is best known for pale lager and Pilsner, its brewing tradition includes different styles, strengths, and brewing traditions.
This guide explains Czech beer types and degrees, where to drink beer in Prague, typical prices, and recommended ways to experience the country’s beer culture, from local breweries and beer gardens to tastings and beer-focused attractions.
What Is Czech Beer?
Czech beer is beer brewed in the Czech brewing tradition, best known for pale, bottom-fermented lagers with a balanced combination of malt flavor and hop bitterness. Czechia has a centuries-old brewing heritage, with one of its most important developments taking place in Plzeň in 1842, when the first Pilsner-style pale lager was brewed. The golden lager became enormously influential, helping shape beer production around the world.
Traditional Czech beer is often characterized by a dense, creamy head and the use of local ingredients, particularly Czech-grown hops such as the famous Saaz variety. Czech brewing also includes different colors, strengths, and classifications, extending well beyond the internationally recognized Pilsner style.
Czech Beer Degrees & Their Meaning
Czech beer is often labeled with degrees, such as 10°, 11°, 12°, or higher. These numbers refer to the original extract of the wort before fermentation, rather than the alcohol percentage. Generally, 10° beers are lighter and lower in alcohol, while 11° and 12° beers tend to be fuller and somewhat stronger.
The degree system also relates to Czech categories such as výčepní, commonly associated with lighter beers, and ležák, which typically includes fuller 11° and 12° lagers. Higher-degree beers are available too.

Types of Czech Beer
Czech beer comes in several colors and variations, from the country’s famous golden lager to darker and unfiltered options. These are some of the most useful terms to recognize on beer menus in Prague:
